Welcome to the latest regional update for Glasgow City Region covering July - December 2023. Find out how we've been supporting and promoting tourism in the area.
Hello from Lynne Cooper, Regional Director for Glasgow City Region
I've now been in my role for almost 3 months and it's been a pleasure to get out and about to meet stakeholders and hear about developments and plans across the region. Whilst there will be continued challenges for the industry in the year ahead, there is also a lot to look forward to.
In the city centre, there will be big birthday's for two of Glasgow's signature annual festivals - Celtic Connections marks its 30th anniversary in Janaury and in March, we celebrate 20 years of the Glasgow Film Festival with another colourful programme of red carpet events.
After a successful summer of world-leading events in 2023, with the inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships and the recording-breaking Banksy exhbition, Glasgow will host our next prestigous sporting event with the World Indoor Athletics Championships in March and we'll see the return of our binenniual contemporary arts festival, Glasgow International, in June.
In the short term, we're working hard with businesses and partners to coordinate a high-quality City Region representation to the global travel trade at VisitScotland Connect in Abderdeen in April. Feedback from the 2023 event was outstanding, so businesses attending have a great opportuity to make new business and leads for a prosperus year in 2025 too.
We hope this update showcases the effort across VisitScotland to position Glasgow as a must-visit tourism destination. I hope to meet as many as possible in the local industry on my travels in the months ahead.

In August 2023, Glasgow and across Scotland welcome the inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships, where 13 UCI World Championships were combined into one mega event for the first time ever.
The Championships were declared a huge success after a preliminary estimate of 1 million spectators turned out to watch the festival of cycling, while millions more tuned in around the world to see the eleven days of cycling action taking place in Glasgow and various locations across Scotland. Glasgow was at the centre of the event, hosting 8 of 13 Championships alongside the official fan zone in George Square.
