The Scotland Outlook 2030 tracker monitors progress against the specific priorities set out in Scotland’s national tourism strategy, Scotland Outlook 2030. This strategy outlines:

  • a vision for Scotland to be the world leader in 21st century tourism
  • a mission to grow the value and positively enhance the benefits of tourism across Scotland

Scotland Outlook 2030 was developed and is delivered collaboratively by public, private, and third sectors, working toward this shared vision and mission.

What is the purpose of the tracker?

The range of economic, social, and environmental objectives of Scotland Outlook 2030 has increased in recent years. That’s why a tracker has been created for tourism stakeholders to monitor the progress of Scotland Outlook 2030.

The Scotland Outlook 2030 tracker has been developed through a collaborative process between:

  • Scottish Government economists
  • Tourism and Hospitality Industry Leadership Group
  • VisitScotland

Methodology

The Scotland Outlook 2030 tracker has been prepared for use by industry, public bodies and partner organisations. It will be updated at the beginning of each year and will include the most up-to-date, verified data. Performance is assessed relative to the previously available period (e.g. a year-on-year change). A robust set of criteria was used to select the indicators in the Scotland Outlook 2030 tracker:

Available

Data for the indicator has to be currently available.

Measurable

Data must be quantitative rather than qualitative.

National

As Scotland Outlook 2030 is a national strategy, the tracker’s primary focus is on data at the national level.

Regularly updated

The data needs to be recurring (ideally updated annually), rather than a one-off survey.

Relevant

Each indicator must relate to at least one of the strategic priorities and outcomes of Scotland Outlook 2030.

Reliable

Data needs to be reliable, robust, and statistically representative, ideally being drawn from national or official statistics.

These indicators will be kept under review and adjusted or added to if and when new data becomes available.

Known indicator omissions include national level community / social indicators and appropriate environmental / net zero indicators. We have plans to address these gaps in data.
