Our focus

As an economic growth agency, our core purpose is to drive the visitor economy and grow its value to Scotland.

Business and experience development is a key focus area for us – along with market development and place (destination) development. Together, these will help us attract investment into Scotland and help businesses to grow.

We’ve been reviewing our approach to business support and advice to ensure it meets your needs and reflects the ever-changing competitive environment.

This means providing tourism and event businesses with free-to-access advice and support to help you deliver quality, responsible, memorable experiences. It means helping you to internationalise and reach new customers at home and abroad as well as respond to the climate emergency, taking action to meet our net zero ambitions.

Tourism, hospitality and events businesses are operating in some of the most challenging times we have ever known. The role of VisitScotland in providing industry guidance, with the specialist knowledge and expertise we have, has arguably never been more important.

Business and experience development

You’ll know from our previous communication that Quality Assurance will be retired as of 31 March 2025. We’re creating a new approach to business support which will see us shift to a wider-reaching year-round programme of free-to-access support for all businesses. This update provides you with the latest on the progress we’ve made.

We’re steadfast in our support for the development of tourism and events businesses across Scotland and have made great strides in building a business support programme which prioritises the key areas where we can make the biggest impact.

We’ll provide support to businesses on a digital-first, but not digital-only approach, with one-to-one advice available where it adds most value. We aim to reach more businesses across Scotland through a year-round programme, which includes:

  • digital advice and support on a range of topics, tailored by sector
  • a programme of webinars and workshops
  • networking and peer to peer learning opportunities
  • marketing opportunities
  • climate action planning and advice on other responsible practices

From early 2025, should you need to get in touch, you can contact our new industry enquiry team who will direct you to the most appropriate support for your business – whether that be VisitScotland resources or those of our partner organisations.

We’ll also be working closely with destinations and sectors across Scotland, as well as our public sector partners, supporting and coordinating our efforts to ensure we offer support that will drive business development and economic growth.

Ultimately, our business support programme will use our resources to help more businesses across Scotland to capitalise on the growing demand for our world-class offering and allow us to promote Scotland as a year-round destination.

Business Support Hub

A key part of our business support programme is the delivery of a new Business Support Hub website. This dedicated digital platform will give tourism and events businesses access to free sector-specific advice, resources and opportunities to help them operate and grow their business in a sustainable way as well as deliver quality, memorable experiences.

The content will be available in multiple formats (video, case studies, practical evidence-based articles). It will include guidance on topics we know are important to businesses, like meeting customer expectations, managing your digital channels and working with the travel trade. It will also allow you to sign up to regular business support email updates, so that you can receive the latest advice right to your inbox.

The Business Support Hub beta website will launch in spring next year. We’re referring to it as our “beta” website because it’s the start of the journey – we know we’ll have more work to do, and we want businesses to help us shape it. Further development of content and features will happen after this date, informed by industry feedback and testing.

Over the next few months, we’re planning a programme of engagement with industry so that we can get continuous feedback on what we’re developing and ensure it best meets the needs of our users.

We’ll be liaising directly with sector groups, key partners in destinations and our public sector partners to ensure we’re complementing what they offer to businesses and developing content that will work for tourism and event businesses.
