Orkney sets the scene for new film, The Outrun, which is based on the best-selling memoir by Amy Liptrot. Amy is a journalist and author, and she won the 2016 Wainwright Prize and the 2017 PEN/Ackerley Prize for her memoir.

The highly-anticipated film is released in UK cinemas from 27 September, and we're working with the film’s distributors, StudioCanal, to promote The Outrun and the Orkney locations which feature.

This forms part of our on-going activity around screen tourism, which we know is a major motivator for visitors to come to Scotland. Our recent Scotland Visitor Survey shows that one in five visitors said that film, TV, or literature was a source of inspiration when deciding on Scotland. Find out more in our Visitor Survey section.

Screen productions, such as The Outrun, contribute to the local economy and create opportunities for longer-term tourism by inviting visitors to experience the locations they've admired on screen.

About The Outrun

The Outrun is a film based on real-life events about addiction and recovery, strength and survival, mental health and the ability of the sea, the land and of people to restore life and renew hope. Four-time Oscar-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan plays the lead character, Rona.

After a decade away in London, 29-year-old Rona returns home to Orkney to suppress her memory of the events which set her on a journey of recovery.

As she heals, Rona gradually finds hope and strength in herself among the wild elements of Orkney.

The importance of screen tourism

To support the film launch, we've worked with the Radio Times and the i newspaper to promote Orkney, and we've created new Orkney focused content to inspire future visitors.

Screen tourism (or set-jetting) is about providing a visitor with a personal experience of a place they're familiar with through film or TV. The Outrun provides an excellent opportunity to promote Orkney and the specific locations which feature throughout the film to inspire future visitors.

It's important for local tourism businesses too. Promoting story and film-based activity helps attract people's attention, create an emotional connection to the place and makes the destination stand out amongst other content and advertising.

We’ve also worked with StudioCanal to make some of the film’s assets available for tourism businesses to use.
