Unique Cottages has issued a press release celebrating 30 years of Scottish holiday properties

Unique Cottages has provided a personal touch that sets it apart for three decades. From traditional bothies and cosy cottages to large country houses, the company helps guests find their perfect escape, offering expert guidance and thoughtful recommendations. Many customers return year after year, forming lasting connections with both the company and the properties they visit.

Founded by Jill Bristow in 1994, Unique Cottages began as a small business run from the lower part of her home in Lilliesleaf. As demand grew, the business moved to a converted cottage on the edge of Newtown St Boswells, where its team of 15 still operates today. Jill’s vision of offering tailored, high-quality holidays remains central to the company’s ethos.

Mark Breed, who started as a teenager on summer work experience, has been a pivotal part of this journey. Rising through the ranks, he became Managing Director in 2002 and the sole owner in 2016.

Reflecting on the company’s evolution, Mark said:

When I first joined, we worked with handwritten confirmations and faxed property details. Moving online early was transformative, but what hasn’t changed is our personal approach. We’ve always been about people—matching guests with the perfect property and supporting owners to get the most from their homes. Seeing the same customers come back year after year is incredibly rewarding.

The company’s extensive relationships with property owners are another cornerstone of its success. Many have entrusted their holiday lets to Unique Cottages for years, drawn by the team’s dedication and expertise.

Iconic properties such as Herston Hall on Orkney and Dunfuinary Cottage on Loch Etive are just two examples of the long-standing partnerships that have flourished. Mark added:

Our owners are the backbone of our business. We work closely with them to understand their goals, provide tailored advice, and ensure their properties thrive. Some have been with us from the very beginning, which is a testament to the trust and relationships we’ve built over the years.
