A message from Malcolm | tourism is a force for good

Tourism and events are an economic and social powerhouse for Scotland, with a collective value worth £10.7 billion, sustaining 229,000 jobs and supporting more than 15,500 businesses.

Our offering is no longer confined to just the summer months - Scotland is a 365-day-a-year destination and every month, every season, every region, offers something different.

We recognise the significant pressure on public finances. It’s therefore more important than ever that we make the greatest impact with the funds we have. The work that we do helps make Scotland a year-round sustainable tourism destination and has clear economic impact.

We promote Scotland as a year-round destination, highlighting hidden gems and lesser-known destinations. And through this activity, we influence people to stay longer, spend more, and visit different places – spreading the benefits across our rural and island areas, as well as our towns and cities.

Of course, we cannot do it on our own. We work with industry, destination and sector organisations and other partners to ensure tourism and events deliver for communities in every part of Scotland, supporting livelihoods and sustaining local communities. Tourism is a force for good – creating economic and social benefits in every corner of Scotland.

Malcolm Roughead OBE, Chief Executive, VisitScotland
